Linked by tin cans and an extremely long ball of
string, the webmaster occasionally receives transmissions from the traveling duo
describing their adventures.
We tried to hire a comic book artist to liven up
Scott's long, dry missives on the geological history of black sand but they all
kept falling asleep. So, if you want to see pictures, you can find the gallery
through a link on the left.

August 8, 2000 - Adventures in
Pasadena
Hello everyone!
Carrie's observations -- Los Angeles is a BIG city.
No duh, you say? Well, originally I thought the Bay
area was a big city and LA was about the same. But
it's not. It's bigger. We have spent hours and hours
just traversing it. We actually made it from Pasadena
to Long Beach using exclusively public transit, which
you will recognize as a small miracle if you have ever
been to the City of Freeways. (And the tightwad in me
must say, for sheer entertainment per dollar, you
can't beat the $2.35 ticket which gets you a
three-hour bus/metro ride and all the LA residents you
can watch!)
Each hour, each mile, each inch of the way was city --
empty soda cans, movie star houses, women with
strollers and small children, parks, tour busses full
of Japanese men with cameras, houses, yards, freight
yards, barbed wire, freeways, parking lots,
supermarkets, pet stores, elementary schools,
Check-n-Go, and of course that glorious ground zero,
the Democratic National Convention. And as footsore
and travelled out as we are, I have the conviction we
haven't seen even 1% of this huge city.
And it would not have been possible if it were not for
our fabulous bed-n-breakfast-n-so-much more: Casa
Alvarez, part of the Tigernet Travel Network.
So I will sign out now, with those thoughts: 1) LA is
big 2) riding the Metro is by far best entertainment
bang for buck and 3) our friends and hosts here in LA
are AWESOME!!! Thank you Gerry for having us, Guille
for hanging out with us, and John and Charyl for
traipsing all over this huge valley to see us! I miss
you all terribly, and wish I could see you all right
now (except those in thesis warriorhood, because
you're probably cranky).
Scott's Notes:
We did travel all over this city...and have seen some
great things. We managed to go to Mann's Chinese
Theater, what a temple of Hollywood (now I just wish
we could have seen a better movie there...Spacecowboys
left a bit to be desired). We have also taken in the
LACMA (Los Angles County Museum of Modern Art) and the
Queen Mary. The La Tour was fantastic, the way the
light was reflected from her hair (Magdalene with the
Smoking Flame). The Queen Mary was, well, HUGE! It
is a large floating art deco masterpiece, and I wish I
could have sailed on her during the 30's.
My shouts go out to our farewell team in the hill (you
know who you are.
